The House of Natural Fibre

The House of Natural Fibre –HONF is a new media art laboratory, founded in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, that focuses on cultural development and new media art. The House of Natural Fiber addresses the principles of critique and innovation, cultural development and New Media art, running numerous New Media art projects and workshops.

HONF received in 2011 the Transmediale Award for their installation Intelligent Bacteria. Transmediale is an international festival for art and digital culture that pursues the development of artistic projects reflecting on the socio-cultural, political and creative impact of new technologies.

Intelligent Bacteria - Saccharomyces cerevisiae responds to the high number of deaths in Indonesia due to alcohol consumption.  Through acoustic and performance installation this project seeks to draw attention to such a pressing social and cultural issue.

The project puts art and biotechnology together using open source technologies in order to make the public aware of the local traditional culture of alcohol, and to distribute knowledge of alcohol fermentation process.
