Synthetic Aesthetics
Synthetic Aesthetics is a project of the University of Edinburgh and the Stanford University. It endeavours to promote collaborations between synthetic biologists, designers, artists, and social scientists and to explore new territory between synthetic biology, art and design.
Synthetic Aesthetics has brought together synthetic biologists and internationally renowned artists and designers to explore together new ideas for the living world.

The project receives residents from all over the world coming from protocell, ‘BioBrick’ and plant science as well as from art and design. During the residencies all the participants, regardless of their field of studies, spend time in the laboratory and in the art or design studio.
The exchanges have to be reciprocal, with both disciplines informing each other and the teams must share their practice, knowledge and ideas.
Synthetic Aesthetics’ goals include informing new schools of art and design, new ways of teaching science and engineering, and innovative approaches to the study of synthetic biology in society, as well as challenging our understanding of art and design practice.
