Sketching new routes

The Department of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the Abel Salazar Institute for the Biomedical Sciences (University of Porto, Portugal), in collaboration with the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology, hosts an annual Symposium (under the title of POINTER - POrto INTERnacional Symposia). The aim is pointing and discussing Human and experimental pathology at the crossroads with other disciplines such as Immunology, Genetics, Virology, Molecular Biology, Clinical specialities, etc.

External President
Each year the Pointer will invite an external Guest Chairman to chair the Symposium. The Pointer Symposia will focus in one organ or topic illustrating the difficulty of progress in knowledge of one subject if all one knows is that subject. In this, the philosophy of the Symposia derives from the inspiring phrase of the histologist and researcher that gives the name to the Institute, Abel Salazar, who is quoted as saying: “a man that only knows Medicine can hardly know it”. A person that today only knows Anatomical Pathology, as it still is called and taught in many schools, can hardly know it.
