Dear Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Doenças Metabólicas (SPDM), we are pleased to invite you to the VIII Annual Symposium of SPDM, to be held in Oporto, Portugal, from 3 to 4 November 2011. The scientific programme under the topic “Inherited Metabolic Diseases and Neurodegeneration - New Perspectives” will focus mainly on the mechanisms of neuropathology, diagnosis, new therapeutic and research approaches in inherited metabolic diseases. This year, we are also pleased to be able to announce the First Luso-Brazilian and Other Countries of Portuguese Language Meeting which will take place on 5 November. The programme for this one-day meeting will address diagnosis and treatment strategies.

The SPDM Symposium venue is located in a beautiful area of the city, within walking distance of the Parque da Cidade (City Park) and the sea front. With a bit of luck, the Symposium may be blessed with the Indian Summer (known amongst the Portuguese people as Verão de São Martinho), which may entice you to walk, at the sunset, alongside the Douro River, in the historical centre of Oporto, to taste a glass of our famous Port Wine. We hope that you will be able to attend the Symposium. The Organizing Committee is doing all it can to ensure a pleasant and warm welcome to you all.
