The measurement of DNA content in individual cells gives information about their ploidy (of particular relevance in tumours), their distribution during cell cycle and their proliferation frequency. On the other hand, studies on cell death are very important in many different subjects in life sciences. One very common subject is the cytotoxicity of metabolites or drugs. Flow cytometry is a powerful tool not only to study cell death but also to quantify the percentage of viable, apoptotic and necrotic cells. In this workshop trainees will learn how to prepare cells for cell cycle, proliferation and cell death assays and how to adequately analyze the results, without misleading interpretations. If already performing these assays and in case of having questions, trainees should bring their data to clarify any doubts with Derek Davies, a renamed expert in these applications.
