The IBMC•INEB is an Associate Laboratory, a partnership of the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC) with the Institute for Biomedical Engineering (INEB).
Currently, the different Research Groups of the IBMC are organized into five Research Divisions: Human Genetics and Genetic Disorders, Biology of Infection and Immunology, Structural and Molecular Biology, Basic and Clinical Neurobiology, Cell Adaptive Mechanisms.
Research Groups at INEB are organized into two Laboratories: Biomaterials, Biomedical Signal and Image.
Effective interactions between life sciences and bioengineering was facilitated by the IBMC and INEB joint effort to establish an Associate Laboratory, a new type of research organisation designed to enhance existing competencies in the fields of biomedical engineering and molecular and cell biology.

This IBMC•INEB Associate Laboratory was one of the first to be recognized by the Portuguese Ministry for Science and Technology. It has a ten-year contract with a mandate to carry out research activities and technological development, collaborate with the government in defining scientific and technological policies, and render services to the community. The activities of the lab must have clear social impact.
Given the social implications and public interest of many of the research topics, both students and researchers have become involved in community activities that include TV and radio programmes, public lectures, school visits, Open Days, and the hosting of school kids in laboratories of the Institute during their vacations. A Newsletter covers monthly activities, and highlights research achievements.
