 Pedro Moradas Ferreira, PhD

Pedro MORADAS-FERREIRA, PhD Biochemistry University College London (UK), post doc at the Université Livre de Bruxelles (Department of Molecular Biology) and Free University of Amsterdam (Department of Molecular Biology).

Presently he is a full Professor of Biochemistry at the "Instituto de Ciencias Biomédicas Abel Salazar", University of Porto (Portugal ) and Director of the research group “Cell and Applied Microbiology “at the Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular, Porto, where he directs a group of 8 Post-doc and 12 PhD students carrying out research work addressing two main topics: mechanisms of oxidative stress adaptive response and bioproducts and bioremediation.

He is at present the chair of the Scientific Committee of the Abel Salazar Institute. He served the Education Committee ad hoc group of FEBS and participated regularly in activities of the Biochemical Education Committee of the IUBMB. He is the delegate of Portugal in the Domain Committee of Biomedical and Biomolecular Sciences of the COST (Cooperation Science and technology in Europe) and in the Panel for Health research in the 7 Frame Work Programme of the EU. He is member of the EU network on ageing research – LINKAGE.

Dr. Moradas-Ferreira’s laboratory has been using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to underlie molecular mechanisms associated with the response to oxidants and the association with longevity and analyses the signaling pathway namely the involvement of sphingolipds as mediators. As one of the achievements in the past, he was the first to reveal the presence of the protein glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase at the cell surface of the yeast and to provide evidences of the multifunctionality of this protein. His bibliography includes 49 original research articles, 4 reviews and book chapters, He teaches subject courses of metabolic regulation and advanced subject courses in graduate programmes of Biochemistry and PhD programmes in Health and Life Sciences. He also participates in sessions of science dissemination to the public at large and has been invited by a number of non science organizations to discuss the science and the public.
