Witold Filipowicz, Friederich Miescher Inst. for Biomedical Research, Basel, Switzerland
Witold Filipowicz is a Staff Scientist at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel, Switzerland and Professor at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel. He graduated as M.D. from the Medical University of Lodz, Poland, and then received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, where he was running his lab until 1984, when he moved to Basel. He also worked at the New York University Medical School (with Severo Ochoa), Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in Nutley, NJ (with Aaron Shatkin), and Institut Jacques Monod of CNRS in Paris (with Anne-Lise Haenni), as either post-doctoral fellow or a sabbatical visitor. His research is focused on RNA processing, on enzymes regulating RNA metabolism, a role of non-coding RNAs in gene expression, and mechanisms of RNA interference and microRNA function and metabolism in mammalian cells and published over 150 papers in this area. He is a member of EMBO, Academia Europea, and foreign member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He received the Lifetime Achievement in Science Award of International RNA Society (2011), and is a member of Scientific Advisory Boards of several Institutes and of Editorial Boards of many scientific journals, including Cell.
