Innovative Micro-and Nano Composites for Biomedical Applications

Dr Hélder A. Santos (D.Sc. Tech., Chem. Eng.; http://www.helsinki.fi/~hsantos/) is an Adjunct Professor in Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology, Head of the Research Unit Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology and Chemical Microsystems at the Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, an Academy Research Fellow, Principal Investigator, and an European Research Council Starting Grant grantee (2013–2017) at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Helsinki, Finland. Dr. Santos' research interests include the development of nanoparticles/nanomedicines for biomedical and healthcare applications. His current work makes the bridge between engineering, pharmaceutical and medical research. His main research focus is in the use of biodegradable and biocompatible nanoporous silicon nanomaterials, polymers, the application of microfluidics technology for nanoparticle production, etc., for simultaneous controlled drug delivery, diagnostic and treatment of cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, and further translation of these nanotechnologies into the clinic. Dr. Santos’ lab is formed by 6 post-docs, 13 PhD students, 4 undergraduates and 1 research assistant/technician. Dr. Santos' is author of more than 120 publications (h-index = 26). In 2010 he received the "Talent Prize in Science" attributed by the Portuguese Government, and in 2013 and 2014 he received the Young Researcher Award and was distinguished by the exceptional scientific productivity, respectively, by the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Helsinki. Dr. Santos is the Editor and funder of the Mesoporous Biomaterials journal, Academic Editor for PLOS ONE, and BioMed Research International, Editor of the book "Porous Silicon for Biomedical Applications", Member of the Editorial Board of several international journals, and member of the World Portuguese Network Adviser For Science. Dr. Santos’ research career and development portfolio since 2009 totals over 4.1 M€ in project funding.
