This workshop won the first prize in the category Laboratório de Biologia e Geologia in the International contest "Ciencia en Acción 2010". This is a practical workshop about genetics that connects literature and science. Based on the family tree of the romance Os Maias, from Eça de Queirós, the students try to find the true heir of the Maias’ fortune using molecular genetics tools.
The “Maias’ heritage” is a hands-on activity centred in analysis of genetic characteristics’ transmission involving concepts such as phenotype, genotype, inheritance of genes, dominant and recessive genetic traits. Thought as an activity to an non specialized public interested in learn more about genetics and molecular biology techniques, the activity was based in a XIX century romance taught in Portuguese high schools, “Os Maias” from Eça de Queirós. This literature classic debates the role of “blood heritage” vs. education vs. cultural environment. On such way, additionally to the original story, a new plot was introduced in order to launch the challenge: “Who is the Maias’ heir?”. Three members of the family, illegitimate offspring of Maias’ members, present themselves as having the rights of inheriting by succession. The discussion will lead to the investigation of the genotype of the presumptive heirs. The laboratory activity consists of a practical simulation in which the inheritance of a single gene will be investigated. A family tree is constructed and the DNA of each member of the Maias’ family will be analysed. The task is to detect which alleles of the gene are present interpreting a pattern of DNA fragments separated by agarose gel electrophoresis. In the end, participants will analyse the results of genetic testing identifying the family members that are homozygous or heterozygous for that gene and inferring who carries the Maias’ genetic heritage.
