Experiments with animals are still an important tool for scientific development. The use of laboratory animals contributes for better understanding of diseases or more efficient therapeutic measures.

The i3S Animal Facility is committed with the idea of improving and encouraging better use of laboratory animals.

The 3R’s application is fundamental through the experimental plan and development. Part of it is done by the training program in which the facility is involved. We believe that thorough training results in better animal models and experimental outcomes and, more important, in higher levels of animal welfare. 

The commitment with the 3R’s application is also based on the role of the Animal Ethics Committee. 

The animal facility provides care and veterinary support to all animals housed ensuring animal welfare and minimizing animal discomfort or pain.
